UNWRITTEN: The Awakening
Emberlight is dead and the world has frozen into grey twilight. A Garnath street thief and a Silverhold paladin, strangers who have never met, wake to find matching marks burning over their hearts: the two halves of a murdered god, recognizing each other. As a fallen order purges the realm in the name of “necessity,” the thing the world killed a thousand years ago is alive again, and every power in Virelya wants it gone.

Before the legend, there was only the girl and the dark. Orphaned at seven, Selene survives the streets of Garnath the only way a child can, by becoming something the city can’t break. Then she finds a starving girl with blue eyes hiding in a doorway, and the walls she built begin to crack. Where it all began.

She was seven the night fire took her family. Garnath’s streets raised what was left, and the Guild finished the job: patience, precision, the difference between a killing and a contract. Now she moves through the free city with twin relic daggers at her hip and her mother’s wooden star against her ribs, and she tells herself the star means nothing.

Each of them arrives alone, in a different place, in a world where dragons are only stories. They find each other within a few years.

At first they believe this world is what Virelya became: the war lost, the knowledge gone, Halric and Vessa having won.

A valley in the Carpathians, beside an old Paladin shrine and Kira's grave, becomes their home and their meeting place. If they lose each other, they meet there.

Talia and Mirael search every record on Earth for any trace of home. There is none. Virelya was not erased here. It was never written.

Constantinople burns
Their first long home burns under the cross. Nysera watches knights loot a holy city. Mirael goes into the burning libraries for the books. Selene gets children out.

The Black Death
They cannot catch it and cannot die of it. Nysera will not leave the dying. Mirael writes down the names of the dead nobody will remember. Talia sits with the dying children. Selene stands between the mobs and the people they blame.

Strasbourg
The city burns its Jewish families, blamed for the plague. Selene cannot save them, and has never forgiven herself.

Rouen
Joan of Arc burns at nineteen. Talia insists on witnessing it. Selene wants to break her out. Nysera stops her: four women in that crowd means four more pyres. Their first real fight.

Würzburg
Mirael is arrested in the witch trials. Torture cannot kill her, and wounds that close overnight are the proof they want. Selene breaks her out.

Salem
Their first year in the New World, and the colony is hanging women. They leave in days.

Scutari
Nysera on Florence Nightingale's wards. The first time she can be what she is in the open: a healer.
- Christmas 1914
No man's land
All four behind the line the night the singing crosses no man's land. It is the night they learn that music tells the truth safely.

Thessaloniki
Mirael's first city on Earth. As its Jewish families are deported, her thousand years of forging names finally saves lives. She has never claimed credit.

The Curtain closes
The Iron Curtain shuts the Carpathians. Talia is caught at the valley. The others are locked out for forty years.

The photograph
Selene, alone in America, walks into a hospital. A real photograph proves it.
- 1959
The far side
The first photographs of the moon's far side. Mirael has kept the moon's record ever since.
- 1987
The papers fail
Mirael forges Talia a way out of Ceaușescu's Romania. A photograph catches it: Talia's face in a decades-old secret police file, unchanged.

Selene leads Talia across the river at night. Nysera waits on the far bank.

Razor Velvet
The Sunset Strip. They play the Whisky as Razor Velvet, for whatever is in the jar, and sleep in the van. Talia drums like forty years of silence coming out at once.

The Curtain falls, and the valley opens to them again.

Something is killing Selene. Adger breaks his promise and writes her back into the book world to be with Kira. Kira sends her home.

Do I need to read Selene: Origins first?
No. Origins is a prequel novella about Selene’s childhood in Garnath. Read it first as a way in, or after The Awakening as the story behind the woman you have just met.
Where does Companions: Until the Last Light fit?
It runs alongside Book One: the same catastrophe, told through Kira’s eyes on the streets of Garnath. It reads as a standalone, and it hits hardest once you know who Selene is.
What kind of story is it?
Sapphic grimdark fantasy. At its heart is the bond between Selene, a Garnath thief, and Nysera, a Silverhold paladin, in a world that buried its worst crime a thousand years ago. It is about found family, faith, and what love costs.
